Go Back to Your Roots came together as a group of songs, some new and some older, that I finally brought into the room with a six-piece band. I wanted to hear what would happen when the songs were given more space and shared energy. We leaned into strings, layered harmonies, and a rhythm section that was really locked in, letting the arrangements grow naturally.
The record was about collaboration and trust. A lot of the songs changed once other players got involved, and that was the point. I was interested in building something bigger than myself while still keeping the songwriting at the center. Go Back to Your Roots ended up feeling like a bridge between where I had been and where I was headed, grounded in connection and the push and pull that comes from making music with other people.

Long ago, when I was just a boy, I knew I wanted to play guitar and sing in a rock-n-roll band. There was always this old, beat up Silvertone laying around that belonged to my mom, and I carried it with me everywhere I went. In fact, my brother and I had it rebuilt by Scott Baxendale, and I still carry it with me. My earliest musical memory is of my mom and dad playing this guitar and singing John Prine’s “Paradise.” As soon as I could hold that revered guitar, I was hooked.
At 10 years old, I got my first electric guitar, and really started writing my own songs. There were these three different guitar-playing bad asses who lived on my street, Hickory Woods Lane, out in Hixson, D.C., we called it-Duplex City. I would just go from one to the next and learn as much as I could, soaking it all up like a sponge. I remember being so excited about making music I even came up with a band name. D.S.F.A. (Doesn’t Stand For Anything). Now that band is real!
The songs on this record are a variety of new and old. The lyrics herein touch every topic from a life of love, happiness, and fulfillment to heartache, depression, anxiety, and regret. To quote my brother Marty Bohannon of The Bohannons in our song “Are You On Drugs?,” these songs were inspired by “the highest highs and the lowest lows.”
This record was made possible by D.S.F.A., As Elyzum Studio, Let’s Pretend Records, and a lot of love and support from my friends and family.
Special thanks to my wife Alex, my daughters Evelyn, Lou, and our third who is on her way, my brother Marty, Billy Joe AKA Heavy Comforter, and everyone who put up with me along the way.
